Can You Insulate the Walls of a House That Is Already Built?

Roger de Oca5 min read

Attics get all the attention because an attic is easy to reach. Walls get ignored because almost everyone assumes that insulating them means opening them, and nobody wants to pull the drywall off a house they live in.

They do not have to be opened. The cavities inside a finished wall can be filled through access points about the size of a coin, which are patched the same day.

How Filling a Finished Wall Works

A frame wall is a row of hollow bays between the studs. Small holes are drilled into each bay, a hose goes in, and foam is injected until the cavity is full. The foam expands to the shape it finds, sets, and the holes are patched. On most houses it is done in a day, and from outside there is nothing to see afterwards.

The reason it matters in Florida is that an empty wall cavity does not just fail to insulate, it convects. Warm air rises inside the bay, cools against the interior surface, falls, and goes round again, which moves heat into the house more efficiently than a solid wall would.

Which Walls This Suits

Injected foam is a retrofit answer, which means its value depends entirely on what is in the wall now.

  • Houses built before modern energy codes, where exterior walls were often left empty
  • Walls where old batts have slumped and left the top third of the bay bare
  • Irregular cavities around pipes, wiring and bracing that batts never filled properly
  • A single hot room, or a wall that faces west and radiates into the house all evening

If the house is open to the studs already, or you are building, there are cheaper ways to fill a wall and we will tell you so.

How to Tell Whether Your Walls Are Empty

You do not need equipment to get a strong hint:

  • Put a hand flat on an interior exterior-facing wall on a hot afternoon, then on an interior partition wall. If the exterior one is noticeably warmer, heat is coming through it
  • Take the cover off an outlet on an exterior wall, with the breaker off, and look into the gap at the side of the box with a torch
  • Notice whether one room is always several degrees off the rest of the house no matter what the thermostat does
  • Listen. Empty cavities carry outside noise that a filled wall dulls

None of those is conclusive on its own. Together they are usually right, and an installer can confirm it in minutes.

What It Does Not Fix

Filling walls is not a substitute for an attic. In a Florida house the roof is where most of the heat arrives, and a well filled wall under a thin attic is money spent in the wrong order. If you are doing one thing this year, do the attic. If the attic is already right and the house is still uneven room to room, the walls are the next honest answer.
